When can I enable dedicated open banking connections for my app?

Dedicated open banking APIs are still relatively immature and do not currently provide a like-for-like feature set with classic Akahu connections. Because of this, Akahu is currently only enabling these dedicated open banking APIs for a subset of customers. If you have an existing Akahu app in production or are building a new app and would like to make use of dedicated open banking APIs, get in touch so we can assess whether they provide the necessary functionality for your use case.

Do I have to enable dedicated open banking connections all at once?

Every decision related to enabling dedicated open banking connections for your app can be made on a bank by bank basis. This allows your app to opt in to this functionality for a particular bank as soon as that bank’s API meets the needs of your app without having to wait for other banks to be ready.

How can my existing users switch to dedicated open banking connections?

This question applies to existing enduring account connections.

Akahu treats dedicated open banking connections as distinct from their classic counterpart (a bit like connecting to a completely new bank). This means that any classic connections that your users have already set up will continue to work as normal.

Migrating existing users to dedicated open banking connections will require them to authorise again with their bank. While this process is not completely hands-free, we’ve worked hard to ensure that the connection migration process is simple for developers to manage. We will be releasing more information about this process shortly.

Will I be able to use dedicated open banking connections with my Personal App?

If you're one of the hundreds of developers using an Akahu Personal App to automate your finances or prototype product ideas: Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you! We will support dedicated open banking connections for Personal Apps in the future. However, right now we're flat tack behind the scenes supporting our commercial customers through this transition. It's this work that allows us to continue providing Personal Apps as a free service.
